Question:

Can you be the same kind of lawyer with ILEX as LLB? ?

I'm still a bit confused about exactly what ILEX qualifies for.

Somebody said it's less academic, so what difference does that make for the jobs? Is all the academic work I'm doing for my law degree a waste of time if I can train another way?

  2. Nope, LLB is the uni degree on the way to being actually a solicitor or barrister, while ILEX qualification will make u same as a paralegal, but not a solicitor.

Really better to get ur LLB then see where it takes u.......u have to take LPC after this, which is equivalent of doing a qualification with ILEX.  Get ur LPC and find a training contract, this is the best route if you can do it, but alternatively take ur BVC and u immediately become a barrister without having to do 2 years training - then u can join solicitors, chambers, ILEX, whatever u want.

Don't think about ILEX until u get your degree (LLB/BA).  then go for it if u want, although since u have ur degree why not go on to be a solicitor or barrister instead of just a legal executive (u will have worked hard enough!).

    Good luck

EDIT:  If u have done ur degree don't just settle for being a legal executive.....it is an option but it is really a compromise; go for solicitor or barrister, u can do it.

  3. ILEX is the Professional Organisation for Legal Executives, and Clerks. Legal Executives specialise in a particular branch of the Law and Manage a department (in my case, it was Litigation). LLB is the Law Degree for Barristers or Solicitors. The exams for Legal Executives cover a narrower range, but in considerable depth, with the emphasis being on procedure. Like most Professional bodies, ILEX  have levels of membership, with Fellows having full membership.
