You do not have to have a high school diploma. You can become a police officer with a GED and some college. The Galveston Police Department requires a high school diploma or GED plus 12 credit hours of college. The requirements vary a bit depending on the department. GED and some college is better than just a high school diploma.  You can get into law enforcement with just a high school dip....it just takes longer to climb the ranks. Sometimes you'll start off as a correctional officer and then get moved up to street patrol.
