Can you become a teacher's aide if you do not have experience in the field?

I recently submitted my resume to the BOE in NJ. I have a passion to work with young children but have no experience in the field (but I am a mother lol). Surprisingly, I received a call from a schol principal who wants to interview me. The interview is tomorrow and I am preparing as we speak. Yet, I am so nervous because of my inexperience. I recently quit my job as an admin.... Does anyone know what I can expect? I know it is most important for me to stress my passion for working with children.. but what else?

  1. I dont know specifics for NJ, as Im in Los Angeles - But I can tell you what I believe to be nationwide because of NCLB.

They will want to know your goals.

No Child Left behind has made a situation where districts are encouraged to set up paraprofessional ladders. The emphasis is to find candidates that want to eventually be teachers. there are certain rules for the level of education of the aide pool - a certain percentage has to have their Aa or be working towards one. Districts are encouraged to show that some of their aides become teachers.

So - do good in your interview!~

They will ask you why you think you'd be a good fit for the school (know the grade levels of the kids and the area that the school is in - if you are a community member all the better)

Theyll ask you what your goals are - it ok to say you are unsure - but you made the first step into education.....

Theyll ask you if you work well with others - its important to be a team with your classes teacher -

again - good luck to you!

  2. I have a teachers aide, and she didn't complete college. She only has a highschool diploma. If you get the job, do your best. She worried throughout last year if she was going to get called back to aide..

I don't think you would need any experience in that field. Keep in mind districts vary!

  3. I think it is important that you also let them know that even though you are inexperienced you are willing to learn and do whatever is asked of you.

When we interview assistants that is one of the things we are looking for.  We hire a lot of moms who have been home with their children and are looking to start a job now that the kids are in school.
