Question:

Can you become a vet tech without an associates degree?

I have a bachelors of science, but have decided to go into the vet tech field. When I used to work in a vet clinic our tech told us that if you worked for a certain amount of time you could just take the certification test and be considered a Tech. How should I go about getting certified if I don't want to go back to school for 2 more years? Thanks for any help.

  1. It may be possible to study & take the test to be certified, without completing the vet tech program, it depends on your state.   In my state recently it was changed, so the 2 year program is mandatory in order to take the test.   Some clinics will still allow and will welcome techs without a degree, although pay may be higher if you have the degree.  Good luck!

  2. I think you can. I'm not a vet tech, but many schools offer this type of 'certificate' and in all reality,  the amount of classes needed MAY add up to be about 60 units which is the same as an A.S.

  3. Many of your courses may articulate toward credit for a degree in veterinary technology. Check with your states VMA or licensing body to see what regulations they have. California does have a short term open window for experiential option for getting certified. No one is legally able to be called a veterinary technician without either graduating from an AVMA approved veterinary technology program, and taking and passing their state and possibly the VTNE, or be in a state such as CA. where you may sit for the exam, but you must pass it before you can get licensed.
