Mark Madden is an humorous, if a bit edgy, radio-show host, largely responsible for the Penguins even still being in Pittsburgh... He made some stupid comments (probably not any stupider than I hear every day on other radio shows, even national ones) then apologized for them right away. It seemed the 1250, the local channel wanted to keep him on, but Bristol came down hard.

Any other Pittsburghers here? It would be one thing is Stan was still on that timeslot, becaues at least he wasn't boring... but have you heard the guy 970 has on now? (snore)

Guess I'll have to listen to music on the way home from work from now on.

  1. Sorry I live in Australia

  2. I've heard him in several time slots on ESPN radio (sunday mornings a few years ago mostly), and all I could think was, "what a blowhard".  ESPN, and more specifically, Pittsburgh, won't be missing anything.  If you want a good sports radio guy, check out Bob McCown on the FAN 590 out of Toronto.  He's just as opinionated and a lot more funny, in a dry humor sense.  And probably about 20 IQ points smarter. Won an award for best show in north america last year too.

  3. Madden's comments weren't just "stupid", they were offensive.  Worse than Imus.

And no, he didn't apologize "right away".  He had to be told to apologize after listeners complained to Bristol.

I heard his show a few times, for as long as I could stand it.  He wasn't humorous, he was annoying.  His style was like Rush Limbaugh, just talking about sports instead.  He didn't tolerate opposing opinions and would harass or degrade anyone who did oppose him.

    I'm glad he's gone.

And at least DVE still plays some good tunes!

  4. This issue was addressed about a thousand times when Howard Stern was still on terrestrial radio...if you are offended by Mark Madden, DON'T LISTEN! There's even a disclaimer that played right before the show came on the air saying that listeners should exercise discretion before tuning in. And really, what's so offensive about the truth? Sure, Ted Kennedy had some health issues but it's not like he is Mother Theresa...plus, Madden apologized. It's unfortunate that people call Mark a "blowhard" when there's an even bigger blowhard named Bob Smizik, who should spend more time writing about sports and less time using his poor column in the Post Gazette to bash his competition, cutting people off at the knees to make himself feel taller. Overall, it's a dark day for Pittsburgh sports talk.
