Question:

Can you breastfeed whilst taking Clexane?

I am not even pregnant yet but I went to see a blood specialist because of a condition I have and he told me pregnancy won't be a problem but after birth I will need to inject myself with Clexane for 3 weeks. (it is an anti coagulant) I'm concerned this will prevent me from being able to breastfeed. Obviously if this is the case then I will just have to put up with it but I just wondered if anybody else had had this? (I didn't consider this when I was talking to the specialist!)

  1. You absolutely can. I am the Mother of a 3 month old baby and was on Clexane injections twice a day for my entire pregnancy because it doesn't cross the placenta and you can breastfeed while on Clexane. Ordinarily you are put onto Warfarin tablets after delivery instead of injections as they are less harsh on the body (and cheaper from a prescription perspective) but it depends whereabouts you're from and what your Hematologist suggests.

    Good luck.

  2. I don't have access from this computer to the websites with that sort of drug info, but do ask the doctor. Most meds are safe to use while breastfeeding.

In general, drugs that are injected are not absorbed orally (otherwise, you could TAKE them orally...) so most are safe to use while breastfeeding, but you'd have to research this one to be sure.

(On the off chance that it IS a problem, you could certainly pump and dump for those 3 weeks, and then start breastfeeding once you are clear to do so.)

  3. Dont know......... But I'll give it a d**n good try.
