  1. It's not just about drinks and toiletries

The 3-1-1 rules apply to all liquids, gels, lotions, etc., including some food items you might not consider "liquids". The TSA has this to say:

All food must go through the X-ray machine. Do NOT bring food to the security checkpoint unwrapped.

Food must be wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are okay, but half-eaten fruits must be wrapped.

  2. Yes.  Gel-type items (yogurt, jello, etc.) must be in 3 oz. containers and in your one-quart bag.

  3. yes, just no liquids over 3 ounces.

  4. Provided that you purchased it on the secure side of the airport, you can bring on whatever you want unless there is fine print on you ticket that prohibits you from bringing such items.  Most likely not.  You just cant bring a 2 liter of pop in the airport from home and expect to be able to get to the plane past "security" with it.
