Can you build up a resistance/tolerance for painkillers?

  1. Yes. Your body can build up a tolerance/resistance of anything if it is absorbed into your system for a continuous period of time. For example I took a medication for seizures for about 10 years and my body basically became immune to it, the medicine stopped working.

    A majority of medication dosages are adjusted by a persons body weight/size,so depending on that ,a persons dosage may not be strong enough, but as someone previously stated it is not a good idea to increase medications without instruction.


  2. Yes you can. After a while your body gets used to the regular dose and may require more for pain relief. Not a good idea to increase the amount without talking to your doctor.

  3. Tolerance to narcotics is a well-known problem. The same doesn't happen with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
