Can you buy, and get insurance for, a car with a G1 license in Ontario?

My husband needs to get lots of driving practice in before he's eligible for his road test in November. We live far away from family and most friends, and our only friends here that can help us have a borrowed car from her father, so we can't really get my husband on his insurance policy easily. We have the money to buy the car now, but I've searched and searched and can't seem to find if this is even possible. As long as he abides by the restrictions of his G1, can we do this? I'd so much rather put the wear-and-tear and gas and insurance money into our own vehicle, besides. Anyone been in this situation? Thanks!
