  1. if you live in a city you might need permission - check the laws in your areas

generally the local LIVESTOCK FEED stores will sell day old chicks in the spring/early summer.. BUT you can buy older ones too..

I buy from livestock and bird auctions which happen in spring and fall, I also know several people who sell birds throughout the year. they are not big commercial breeders, just farmers with too many birds.

talk to people at the feed store, they will know if you have these auctions in your area, or if there is somebody who has chickens

here are 2 VERY good links about pet chickens.  (I have 4 myself)

  2. It is not a stupid question.. Today with so many people in shock at the price of food a lot of people have started raising chickens. Each local municipality has their own law. Check out the law for your city at:

For where to buy it is late in most places to buy from the local tractor supply or feedlot but there are a lot of hatcheries out there that sell day old chicks. For just 1 or 2 your best bet is www.mypetchicken.com. Or look or craigslist. You can often find them there or you can advertise for one.

Remember though don't go into this lightly these are animals and need a lot of care.

  3. Go to any "Chickens-R-Us" store.

  4. Most farm stores have chicks in the spring.  But this time of year you will have to buy from a farm, or a hatchery if going through a hatchery you will most likely have to order between 15-25 at a time.  Depending on the breed and the gender of the bird you are looking at at least $2.00 (most likely more) per chick.  Most places will let you have chickens, if you are in a populated area try to get one of the breeds that don't make as much noise.  You can also call your local feed stores and ask them to let people know that buy chicken feed that you would like to purchuse some. Another place to check is you local state extension service office and have them advertise in the 4-H newsletter for you.  Also check with your local high schools that have vo-Ag/FFA and see if they might have kids raising birds.  Know what you want there are many different chickens out there kinda like saying you want a dog people are going to need to know do you want eggs or do you want meat. And just like dogs some are just for show, and some are breed to fight.  You can also buy baby birds and started chicks and adult birds at eggbid.com

good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

  5. You can get them at Tractor Supply Stores. They are there when it is close to easter and soetimes after. Or a hatchery in your area. Look at google and type in "Chicken Hatcheries in ***(put your state)."

I never got permission. I live in city limits and own chickens. If you live in a strict area where there is a lot of horrible people that cause trouble you should only get hens. And ask your neighbors as well. SOme cant stand the cockadoodledoing. Others can. So hens wont cockadoodledoo. Roos do. If you dont get permission and get them, if they are vothering others they may call compalant or come and talk to you. Roosters are the only thiong to worry about. If you do Not want babies than just get hens and no roo. You can get free eggs when they are mature at 5-6 months old.

  6. You can buy baby chicks in the spring at local farm supply stores.   You could also try finding a farm nearby and ask them.   Chickens usually lay eggs daily, so that's chicks aplenty if they let the egg hatch.

And you don't really need permission unless you live somewhere that has a livestock restriction.
