Can you buy a phone w/out contract then use a prepaid card?

was wondering if I could buy a cool phone, just the phone and then buy a pre paid card and still be able to use it even though the phone is from verizon and the sim card is from att?

Verizon phone do not have a place to put in sim cards. So the answer would be no you could get a Verizon prepaid phone though if that helps?
