Question:

Can you buy a prison?

I'm making a story... This might sound like a stupid question, but can you buy a prison? Without the prisoners, of course. And if so, how much? If you had to construct your own high security prison because you can't buy one, how much would that cost? And how long would it take?

I needed to know for, as I said, my story that I'm working on. I figured for this story a prison is a pretty safe place to be(I won't go into detail).

Any help is greatly appreciated :3

  1. There were some private prisons built in the 1990's and the space was rented out. Google Corrections Corporation of America, they have several currently in existence. They are cheaper than municipal run facilities, because they do not pay the same benefits.

  2. The answer is YES.  Even though traditionally prisons were owned exclusively by the political entities (Federal, State, County, City, etc.), it is not like that anymore in many places.  Since the republicans came to power (I think with Pres. Reagan), almost everything was privatized.  Prisons included.  So, there are various private entities that own prisons (structure and management have been privatized).  So, if the price is right for the owner, I can see no impediment for you to own a prison facility.  (Naturally, without the prisoners, unless you are fit to do the job as a private contractor).  Good luck.  Adian.

  3. I hear the Republicans might have one down in Cuba up for sale soon.  Keep checking eBay for it.

  4. Im sure you can buy one that is about to be torn down and replaced. Where would you get your inmates? lol
