Can you buy a satellite dish reciever and have it hooked up instead of going through DirecTV?

We have a box in all of our rooms except one. My mom called DirecTV and they said it would be $70 plus $5 per month. The $5 a month isn't the issue it's the $70. Can I get one on ebay or something?

you can buy your own disk but the days of free satellite TV are over signals are encoded now a days.

That's weird.  I have 8 boxes and i sure didn't pay $70 for any of them except for the HD DVR.  

To answer your question though, yes you can buy one on Ebay or something but if DirectTV finds an outstanding balance on the card then it will have to be paid before they will activate the card.  I'd call 1-800-Directv again and see if you can get someone different.  Granted it's been a while since I got one but having to practically buy the receiver for $70 AND pay rent on it makes no sense.
