  1. Yes and if you decide to buy one just make sure you have it seen by a vet to check its health right away.

  2. You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. You can get it for less from a private breeder in your area (you could probably google search this). Petco birds are often advertised as handfed, but this only means that they were hand fed as babies. Petco people are often too busy to interact with the bird, and sometimes even sell sick animals. Most breeders interact with their birds daily, resulting in tamer birds that are much easier to handle. Petco is good if you want a parakeet or cockatiel, but if you're looking to get a parrot or a conure, I would check the private breeders in your area.

  4. Many Petcos will not carry them.  About 5 years or so Peta was pickiting petstores that carried larger birds, and Petco is one of the ones that caved in.  Most of them will not carry anything larger than an Amazon, but you must sometimes order it from them.  Many of the Petcos will not keep these birds in the store unless they have a customer that wants one.  I know this because Petco buys about half of our smaller birds and we had a meeting with them about the larger birds.  We do not ship the birds by commercial airlines,  the owner of our aviary has a private plane and is always gone, making deliveries to the closest airports of the Petco and other stores that are buying the birds.  Pheonix has no idea where petcos birds come from.  All petstore birds  come from breeders.  And they MUST be checked by a vet before any petstore buys them, that is the LAW.  (except for budgies)  Every bird (except the dang budgies) that is sold to a petstore has to have a health certificate from the vet.  This certificate is not passed on to the person that buys the bird from the petstore, it is just for the petstore.  And Petcos require the breeder to have blood work to be done on all birds for diseases and they also have to have vaccines against certain disease as well.  Trust me, I spend many hours drawing blood from birds to send off to the lab.  If a bird from Petco is sick, it is not because it came that way from the breeder.  Petco is the most particular store we sell to.  They also do inspections several times a year at all the aviaries that they buy from.  (except for the budgie breeders who are usually small potato breeders)  We have to carry certain insurances and everything.  So don't talk about Petco unless you have your facts together.  Please read my profile

  5. Yes, but it's not recommended.  For such expensive birds, you can get healthier and sometimes cheaper ones from private bird breeders.

Pet store chains are looking to get the best deal--for them, of course.  So they charge alot for a bird that hasn't had proper veterinary care.  You can get healthier ones from private breeders.
