Can you buy an iphone 3G without having to sign up with a&t?

What do u mean by unlocking it with other comapnies?

It depends.  If you have T-Mobile you can buy an iPhone 3G UNLOCKED because T-Mobile and AT&T use Sim Cards.  Otherwise you must sign up for AT&T

Unless you get it from eBay, then no.

AT&T will have no contract purchases for $599/$699 in the future.

Even then you'd still have to unlock it.

This is for the iPhone 3G.

The original iPhone can be purchased without AT&T since you did everything at home...which then instead of activating through iTunes, just unlock it.

Of course you can .. go on ebay or craigslist.  Some people can unlock the iphone to use with different companies.
