Question:

Can you buy car insurance the very moment you buy a car? Do insurance companies work that quickly?

Can I phone an insurance company the instant I buy a car and say, "Hey, I just bought a car. I want to get insurance for it."? I think companies should do this because if I take off from the dealership without insurance, and somebody hits me on the way home, I'm in trouble, right? I looked everywhere for this information, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Could somebody clarify this issue for me?

  2. Yes, you can get immediate coverage. You should have it lined up before you even buy.

  3. Pretty much. If you for example already HAVE insurance for another car and are just adding a new car to your policy,

they can just add your new car in a few seconds. They know you and know how much the insurance for the new car will be.

If you don't have insurance, you will have to fill out their paperwork, get approved, get a quote etc.

No dealer is going to let you drive a car off the lot without insurance by the way. They will make you show proof of insurance!!!!!! Something You didn't think of I guess :)

If you are planning on buying a car for the first time...the best thing to do is talk to your parents insurance company. You may have been a second driver on a policy so they already know who you are etc. Call a few insurance companies. tell them more or less the type of cars you are shopping for.

They will be able to give you a quote, so at least you'll know what to expect. Keep in mind thought that if you tell them you are thinking of buying a Ford Focus, and they quote you $1000...and then you go and buy a BMW...the insurance is going to be a heck of a lot higher!!!!!

  4. Many companies will issue a policy over the phone whether you already have a policy with them or not.  Of course if you already have coverage with a company on another car, most of them extend coverage to a new vehicle for 30 days automatically whether you call to add it or not.  That way you have a few days to get your stuff together and take care of it.  Also in case you buy on a day that the company is closed.  Now this isn't the case with every company or in every state, so you may wish to check with your specific company on their specific policies.  They have a much better chance of issuing on the spot if you have immediate access to the info they need, otherwise, they may not be able to issue it at that moment.  If you'd like to look at the info you're likely to need before hand to be sure you have what you need, you can read an article on the subject here: http://www.knowyouragent.net/WhatInforma...

  5. Yes... they do this.... They will issue you a policy in under thrity minutes usually. And you can't drive off the lot without having insurance.... at least not if you are financing the car.

  6. Yes they do, in fact many companies will not let you drive off the lot until the car is insured.

  10. yes i recently bought a car and that day i bought car insurance and was is covered that day as long you have the money to pay on the spot. my insurance is through progressive.
