Can you buy food in vending machines like you can here in the USA if your in jail?

Only in the visiting room. Inmates are not allowed to use the machines but their visitors can.

I cannot speak for every jail or prison, but the ones I have worked in there were no vending machines and inmates were not allowed to have cash.

What is in most prisons and jails is an inmate store.  Inmates that have money, have a sort of script and are able to go to the prison store and buy snacks and other items they might need or want.

Not been to jail, yet, but I can imagine you can in the UK.

UK jails are probably nothing compared to US jails. In the UK they are more like hotels. Here the human rights of criminals are considered above those of other citizens, especially the victims of crimes.

Is it any wonder our jails are overflowing and many of those are repeat offenders.
