  1. You could if you knew a lot of other things about the airplane.  Vx is actually a definable number that exists where Thrust available over Thrust required is maximized.

    If you knew those numbers you could.  But those are really hard to get.


  2. i think it depends on the aircraft's maximum ramp mass, its aerodynamic performance/limitations, and the power of its engine... put them all together and you'd need a darn good mathematician to come up with an airspeed that gets a plane as high as it can with the least possible distance. i'm pretty sure the manufacturers have already calculated that figure even before the plane is built.

  3. it is normally done empirically.

  4. Climb across a fixed distance at different speeds, and find the speed that gives you the most altitude gain.
