So my bf and I are debating. He says that you can still call any type of pasta (that is not macaroni) with a cheese sauce "macaroni and cheese". I asked him then, well wouldn't that theory then make both elements replaceable? So would macaroni with red sauce, or even say salad dressing still be called macaroni and cheese? He says no, that only the type of pasta is allowed to be subbed and still be called macaroni and cheese.

What are your thoughts on the issue. I don't think you can call spaghetti noodles with cheese macaroni and cheese, just as you cannot call macaroni with red sauce macaroni and cheese...

please respond so we can have a better understanding of this...

is this subjective?

  1. Traditionally a dish with any type of pasta is referred and named with the type of pasta included. For example, Fettucini Alfredo uses fettucini, Pepperoni Rigatoni uses rigatoni, Mostacolli same thing. And how could you call Lasagna of any variety, Lasagna without the long wide curl edged pasta sheets? You see what I mean?

In Italian style dishes the ingredients other than pasta also get mentioned too, like Spaghetti Bolognese (meat sauce),...culinary license does allow versatility too as you might find dishes such as Pasta Provencal, Pasta Primavera, or even Pasta Salad on menus. Believe me though in dishes like these chefs will utilize some type of interesting pasta to make their presentation on the food look fabulous and exciting. So Macaroni and cheese should stay that way,

  2. I think he's crazy!

  3. Just think of it as spaghettoni.

  4. Uhh...... Well I call pasta with cheese sauce spagetti and cheese.

And no, I would consider macaroni noodles with pasta sauce spagetti

  5. h**l NO!  You have to use macaroni to call it macaroni and cheese.  If you order spaghetti in a restaurant they wouldn't give you ravioli!  One noodle should never be substituted for another noodle!  They all have their own unique shape and texture. Also noodles should never be mixed.  Call me a noodle racist if you want, but they just shouldn't.  If Moses hadn't have dropped the other comandments, thou shalt not mix or substitute noodles would have been the 11th commandment.

  6. no.macaroni is a different type of pasta than spaghetti.just call it spaghetti and cheese. macaroni is a type of pasta shaped like a tube that has a hole in the middle. spaghetti is famous type of pasta which is thinner that fettuccini and tagliatelle but thicker than angel hair.

If you were in a restaurant and you would like to order macaroni and cheese wouldn't you feel deceived and irritated if they served you with spaghetti and cheese or lasagna and cheese?

There is no argument here. it is all very self explanatory.why would you even call spaghetti macaroni in the first place?

    cheers!:D
