Can you catch genital herpes from sharing a cigarette with an infected person. what if you don't what kind?

i had shared a cigarette with someone who i later learned has herpes, an i just wanted to know if you can catch herpes that way.

The key word in your question is GENITAL.  No, you can't catch genital herpes from a cigarrette that hasn't been anywhere (we hope!) except their mouth.  You can catch the herpes virus that gives cold sores if they have that however.

If they only have genital herpes, then you will not have contracted it from sharing a cigarette. However, if they also have oral herpes, you could very well have contracted it. I'd still be tested just to be safe. It would be easy enough to go to the bathroom, not wash your hands, then pull out a cigarette and touch your face. Just because there are no outbreaks does not mean it's not still transferable.
