I'm currently using Windows Media Center Edition 2002, which is obviously out of date by now. I have ALL the other operating systems now. Would I be able to change operating systems without formatting? It's ok if you have to, I just don't have the time to back up all my files to CDs.

  1. If you're asking if you can install a new operating system with out formatting, that's a loaded question.  If you want to upgrade to Vista, odds are you can purchase an upgrade, that will just load on top of your existing OS, and retain your files.  This isn't a sure fire method, and there's a small chance you'd need to start over (so you should back up first).

You can also partition your hard drive into multiple partitions and have more then 1 operating system installed.  That way, when you start up, it will ask you which one you want to load.

  2. yes you would.

  3. Just get an OS that is a higher version (Vista) and it will install itself in place of the current OS, without loss of personal files.

  4. There is no need to format the disk. The setup of the new OS will automatically detect the other OS and ask you what to do. It is always a good idea to keep the old OS side by side for some time until the new one works fine. During this time, you will be asked to choose the OS when booting.

  5. You can use Ubuntu live without touching your hard drive at all.

  6. Just when you install the new OS, do an 'Upgrade'.

PS: WMCE is not out-of-date yet.
