Can you change the maps in a GPS?

I am looking at a GPS on ebay but it has a europe map, can I put an australian map on there???

  1. Depends on the GPS.   (You'll get better answers when you include such details...)

    Most Garmin handhelds have a basemap that is not exchangeable, but allow you to upload detail maps.  This can cause some routing weirdness.

    Most of the Magellan handhelds have basemaps that can be swapped, with the caveat that if you swap a map that you don't own (and the AUS basemap is *very* expensive and they vigorously pursue "offenders") the warranty is not only voide, they'll charge you for AUS maps if you send it in for repair after the warranty.

    Other brands have other situations.


  2. Yes, you should be able to.

    Best to look up the manufacturer of that GPS and find out. More than likely either you can download them or they are there but not activated.

    You could also ask the seller.

  3. Yes, generally.  Garmin has a version of City Navigator for Australia.  I don't think Magellan does though.  I've heard of Australians with Magellans having to go through Magellan's reseller in Australia to get a set of maps.
