Can you change to Linux from Windows XP?

I bought the new Acer Aspire One with Windows XP because I couldn't get one with Linux. Now I'd like to know if I can install Linux? I've already removed the 60 day trial Office and installed Open Office. I've heard that Linux is better for Netbooks because you don't have to worry about virus invasion. I'm just not familiar with Linux, so I need advice. Thanks!

  1. Hang on to XP for the time being with doing a full installation. You can Dual Boot Ubuntu 8.04.1 using Wubi Installer, so you can get the hang of things. You keep Windows as it is, Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/ only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

  3. Basically, you need to acuiqre or download the Linux Desktop edition or what ever it's called.

    Save it to a disk

Then boot your computer from disk,

Install Linux, or a selected version of Linux.

Then format your drive to remove Windows.

    and ta-da.

  4. XP isn't all that bad just install avira or avast both free to use.

  7. First: There are a lot less viruses for Linux indeed, but they exist.

Why don't you go with Ubuntu? It's easy to use, and quite noob-friendly :)

It also offers Wubi, meaning it'll install Ubuntu in Windows (dualboot), and you won't need to partition your harddrive.

Simply download the iso from ubuntu.com, burn to disc, and install from Windows.
