Can you change your speech/voice?

I feel like I dont have a good speaking voice and feel self conscious about it when I need to address people in general. Is there a way to practice to where I feel better about it or to change my voice to make it sound better?

I was thinking of practicing in front of a video camera or something like that till I can feel better?

  1. some hospitals allow treatments to do that but it cost ALOT.

  2. Yes you can have elecution lessons and-or drama coaching which will give you more confidence when speaking anyway.

  3. Actually, yes you can practice in front of a video camera. That is a great idea! Here's another one - try practicing in front of a mirror too. This way, you can see how you look to the general public, as well as hear yourself.

If you feel self-conscious about public speaking, don't sweat it too much. More than half the people you speak to in general, feel worse about their own speaking voice than you feel about yours. Always remember - people are incessantly concerned first about themselves (how do I look? how do I sound? is everybody staring at me?) than they are about others. It's human nature.

Keep your spirits up, walk confidently and you'll get over the fact that you don't like your speaking voice. Remember too, somebody else might really like your voice and wish they had it!

Just something to keep in mind....

  4. I'd love to give you a long descriptive answer on this, but instead I have a website that you need to check out.  Plus it saves me a lot of time typing.

  5. YES. Lauren Bacall originally had a squeaky "Minnie Mouse" type voice. She practiced talking lower to get the s**y, throaty sound she has now (she does lots of voice over work). There are voice coaches to work with, but you can practice on your own. Demosthenes (famous greek) put marbles in his mouth and practiced talking around them to clear up his mumbling voice (they used that in My Fair Lady too). If you get to where you can be understood with the marbles in your mouth, then you're REALLY clear when you take them out. Singing In The Rain also has some scenes about improving voice.

Practice in the shower too--the small room makes your voice sound richer and can help build your confidence.
