  1. You haven't paid any VAT on it so you can't claim any.

Nope.  VAT is only payable on luxury items, items which are classed as a necessity for life can not be made vatable.  The majority of food is zero rated the only odd one which springs to mind immediately is chocolate.....yep, you pay VAT on chocolate...my arguement that it is a necessity for me didnt wash with the tax inspector or my expenses claims sighssssssssssss
