I live in California, and I have to start student teaching this January, which means I won't be able to work for 3 months basically. Can I collect U.I. during this time or not? I can't work, so I figure I can.

  1. You have to be laid off or fired to collect unemployment.  You could work nights during your student teaching--I did.  Sure it was hard.  Teaching will be hard, too.  Welcome to adulthood.  Life is work.

  2. No, because legally, it is seen as voluntarily leaving your job.  It sucks, but you will just have to do it.  Everyone who has been a teacher has been there.  Try to get some extra student loans or other college funding.

  3. No.

It is considered a college course.

Ask it as such: Can i get unemployment because college takes up too much time to work?

No. All 4 million of us US teachers did it - Its a common question that won't get you past the first phone call at the unemployment office.

  4. You can only collect unemployment if you were let go from your job...not quit.  All I can say is save save save and see if you have any friends or family that can help out.  Both my husband and I went through this, I think we ate more roman noodles than we did all through out college.  See if you can get part time work.

  5. If you were full-time employed before, probably.  However, you would have to leave your other job permanently, not just go on leave.  If you are talking about part-time work while being a full-time student, then the answer is no.

  6. Sorry, no.  You have to have been forced out of your job, not voluntarily quit.

  7. You voluntarily left. You were not laid off or fired. You have to prove that you are looking for a job, which doing student teaching you wouldn't be able to do this.
