  1. As suggested so far, it may be dictated, or allowable at your choice. Certainly how you proceed depends on codes and zoning regs. among other issues.

       I happen to prefer pouring footers, at an appropriate depth for the weigh to support, the code issues, any frost line issues, and soil composition issues.

       I prefer Pier Blocks with a 4 x 4 bracket embedded, either a solid one, or an adjustable, allowing fractional leveling.

  2. It is better to concrete a metal stirrup into the ground then attache the post to it. Otherwise if there is a lot of moisture around the post will rot. also if there is any white ants in your area they will easily get into the post through concrete

  3. I pour a concrete footer with a metal post base.  Building code here (Colorado) does not allow to have posts set directly in the ground.
