My internet connection doesnt need a modem and uses a direct ethernet cable from the wall to the computer. But when I try to connect via linksys router, it's unable to connect to the internet. My internet service provider says one thing and linksys says another. Any ideas?

  1. try both

  2. make sure you are plugging your computer in the computers port and your cable from the wall in the modem port.

  3. First of all you need to check what kind of a router you have. routers are two types, wireless only and ones which are dual purpose. if the router has a RJ45 port on it then you can connect a ethernet cable into it and get connected wired and with the antenna you can get connected wireless. most of the routers would not have both the capablilities. check that first.

secondly i dont understand whats the idea about a modem. MODEM is a modulator demodulator. it converts the analog signals into digital.

it is the gadget which converts the packets into readable version and connects you to the internet. without modem you cannot connect to the internet.

According to my understanding the wall outlet means you have a community router and modem which you share. you are trying to connect to this router. if you add another router then it has to be configured to the settings of the first router.
