We just bought a new furnace last year before oil prices went crazy. Is there an easy way to change it or would we have to replace the furnace again?

  1. Yes, you can find a contractor who would put a gas "gun type" burner in your furnace.  But do not do it. The unit would only be as safe as the last person who worked on it. If you want gas buy a gas furnace.

  2. the cost to convert would be as much as a new furnace,

  3. Personally I wouldn't do it even if was possible which I don't it is. It would be a fire hazzard.

  4. No, the inside of a gas furnace is not built to withstand the direct contact of heat. Coal furnaces have a firebox where the fire burns the coal. Fireboxes are usually made of firebrick. You would be much farther ahead by converting the whole unit over to a coal burning unit. Have you thought about how much pollution your coal furnace will emit into the air? Coal is a dirty fuel and it will make your walls dirty. Fuel oil will do the same thing.

  5. we owned a family heating and air business in Chicago a million years ago and from experience, I can safely say that, yes it can be done, and yes, it is much much cheaper than trying to replace the whole unit, depending on what condition your present heat plant is in. Getting rid of the oil tank is sometimes a problem, unless you are lucky enough to have a large doorway to access. But as far as removing the burner unit and hooking up a natural or propane gas line, not so big a deal. Get some prices from a few recommended service companies that your neighbors have used and feel comfortable with.

  6. we're in the same boat. I think electric is cheapest right now, will that change again? I am thiinking of adding electric heat also. that way if electric goes up gas could be cheaper. you never know.
