Can you cover a gas floor furnace during the summer?

we have a in floor furnace, the one with the giant vent and the pilot light has to stay on apparently. my husband is wanting to put a cover over it someway but i dont think its safe. i would appreciate any advice.

  1. Cut the gas valve off.

    Cover the hole.


  2. ok as long as the gas is turned off and the unit is shut down totally for the summer

  3. The main flame is vented to the outside.  You should be able to cover it.  The best thing is to cut the gas off and turn the pilot off - it may use like 40% of all the gas you use in the summer, for nothing. Relight it in the fall.
