Can you cover a small cavity with a sealant?

I have a small black cavity on my back tooth, and I was wondering if I could cover it with a sealant. Do I have to pay for both a filling and a sealant. Will the cavity decay even more if I just put a sealant over it?

  1. i think you should just get it filled because after the dentist fill any cavity they usually use a sealant on it.  So you only pay for the filling

  2. No, the decay HAS to be remove before a filling can be done....A sealant would only seal in the decay and it would then progress further....

Decay is an active disease, and has to be removed.

Sealants are applied only to cavity-free teeth.
