i have a valid CA drivers license, im 17, ill be with a 16 year old friend, walking across the border.

do i need a passport too?

Yes, you will need a passport, or you will need a receipt saying that you've ordered a passport. You will not be able to prove you are from the United States without it. Driver's license does not qualify for international traveling. Make sure you have your passport to avoid any problems. They issue five year passports to children, rather than the ten year ones that adults apply for.
