I want to know what the rules are. I'm positive you at least need a birth certificate, but do you need anything else?

  1. You need a U.S. passport.  The requirements for the passport for minors (under 16) are here:

    http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/min...

You need your birth certificate and a proof or relationship document, which could also be your birth certificate if it has your parents' names on it.

You also need your parents' to show ID.

  2. Listen to Juan. You do not need a passport until June 2009 unless you are flying to Canada. US citizens under 18 are still allowed to cross into Canada by LAND or SEA (That means bus, train, car, or boat) using just a birth certificate. If you are over 18, you need a supporting document, such as a driver's license.

Since you are under 18, you may be questioned as to whether your parents gave you permission to cross the border, and may be asked to show proof that your parents know where you are going to be staying in Canada and how long you will be there. That may require a signed letter of authorization as well as their address/phone number in case they want to follow up with them.

Usually when you need this extra letter from your parents is when they are suspicious of your trip. For example, if you are a child or young teenager and crossing the border alone (possible runaway), or a young person crossing with an older adult (possible abduction).

  3. I did.

  4. You don't need a passport right now unless you fly.  That rule doesn't change until next summer.  However you do need detailed written permission from you parents or guardians.

  5. If you are travelling from the US into Canada you need a valid passport.  The US changed thier laws recently and a a birth certificate alone might not grant you access back into the US (stupid I know)  So make sure you have a valid passport and you will be fine.

  6. Yes you can but you CAN'T use your birth cirtificate anymore. That law was passed in december 2007. You MUST have a valid U.S. passport to travel to ANY other countyr, including Canada. (even if you drive)
