Cleavage is the pattern set up buy the atomic structures in a mineral. These minerals , like quartz all have an different atomic dencities and structure. Example: quartz when broken with a hammer will produce pieces all about the same shape. Now take florite and break it all the same shape ( cubic) but not the same shape as quartz. . This is due to these atomic structures stacked up on one another, and combining to build into said minerals &quot;cleavage&quot;  A good field test is as follows: Because I look for amethyst in the white mountains I understand what fractured quartz cleavage looks like. While digging an top of a quartz vien I found a big purple rock, clear but covered with fine clay and hard to see. But without even cleaning the stone I noticed its &quot;Cleavage&quot; was not that of amethyst. It was &quot;fractured&quot; into a cubic &quot;cleavage&quot; and I knew it was purple florite. Mineral cleavge and fracture can be used to identify minerals. Luster is a minerals ability to refract light through it. Streak is an inclusion or fracture within said mineral specimen.
