    or in more detail:

An animal is a living organism belonging to Kingdom Animalia that possess several characteristics that set them apart from other living things, such as:

    1. eukaryotic and usually multicellular; an animal is composed of several cells performing specific functions.

    2. heterotrophic; an animal depends on another organism for sustenance and generally digests food in an internal chamber (such as a digestive tract).

    3. lacking a cell wall.

    4. being generally motile; able to move voluntarily

    5. possessing specialized sensory organs for recognizing and responding to stimuli in the environment

  3. Animals are a major group of multicellular, eukaryotic organisms of the kingdom Animalia or Metazoa. Their body plan eventually becomes fixed as they develop, although some undergo a process of metamorphosis later on in their life. Most animals are motile, meaning they can move spontaneously and independently. Animals are also heterotrophs, meaning they are dependent on other organisms (e.g., plants) for sustenance.

Most known animal phyla appeared in the fossil record as marine species during the Cambrian explosion, about 542 million years ago.
