The soldier is either triumphant and returning home to some carnal indulgence much to the dismay of the cherubs who are trying to stop him from doing so. Or the soldier is a century who should be standing guard of Rome and the cherubs are protecters of the empire. The rubenesque woman represents all that is evil and sinful in the world which is the mentality Rome is trying to avoid.
