Can you destiffen/lessen the stiffness of a golf shaft?

Well, Im 16, play to a 5, and drive the ball around 250, maybe a bit more. Anyways, I currently use a HiBore 10.5 w/ Graffaloy blue (Reg flex, but 65or75 grams, i forget) and about 6 months ago my friend was getting rid of his 905r so i bought it off him for super cheap, but it was a stiff flex. Its a UST Proforce V2 (S, 76g, 2.2 torque). Is there a way to lessen the stiffness of it (perhaps soak it in something) or should I just bulk up and swing faster?

  1. If you happen to prefer a Regular flex shaft...by all means have a Reg Flex installed...its not that expensive.  There is no way to lessen the flex rating of a shaft.  I would let the bulking up bit happen on a normal basis and not worry about swinging faster......Your game sounds pretty fine to me.  Let the equipment fit you not you fit the equipment.....you'll enjoy it much better that way

  2. There's no way to decrease the stiffness of a shaft. You could effectively stiffen one, however, by removing the shaft from the clubhead, clipping off some of the tip and reseating it.

Shafts aren't terribly expensive. If you like the head, take it to a clubmaker and have him put another shaft in.

  3. Why don't you just put the shaft in the Hibore into the 905?  It won't cost that much to do at your local pro shop.

  4. No. If your 16 and play to a 5, you should be using a stiff shaft unless you like to play a draw.

  5. Not really a good way to make a shaft play weaker.  It sounds like you should be on the verge of using a stiff shaft.

If your a right handed golfer and are leaving the ball out to right on your tee shots, you might try three or four grams of lead tape on the sole near the heel of the club.  This should help you release the club a little more, giving you a better ball flight.

    Good Luck.

  6. So, you're 16, play to a 5 handicap and drive the ball about 250 yds.  And you want to destiffen the shaft of a driver.  C'mon, give me a break!  Go out and have fun and don't worry about that driver.  Put it away for a year or so, you'll probably grow into it.

  7. Nothing but changing the shaft. Sounds like you're going to want the stiff shaft anyway.

  8. the grafalloy has more tourque , softer tip . the ust stiff tip , less tourque , two different shafts altoghter , the ust will give you lower launch , lower flight . the grafalloy more height . more carry . both shafts should be .350 tips , shaft swap will work . the ust  is not the proper shaft for everybody . your swing will let you know when to change , when the clevland starts high hooks time to change to other driver , also this time of year the air is heavy so you will not be getting accurate feedback due to density of air you will loose distance , dont try to swing faster , you have a great driver that has the wrong shaft for now , 3 months from now  time to go to back up . and i will buy the clevland . plus i have 80 plus wedges , if your short . dont change anything . time will be soon

  9. You can't really "soften" a shaft, but you could make it considerably heavier in the head (10-20 grams), which would make it respond as if it were softer, usually by adding lead tape to the sole.

The added weight to the head will definitely add swing weight which may throw off your swing tempo, if you chose to counter weight the butt end of the shaft (with the same 10-20 grams) you could keep the swing weight the same as it is now.

Or you could have the Graffaloy put into your Titleist. Have you tried the V2 yet? Every manufacturer has a different standard for it's flex ratings, maybe you'll like it. Good luck.
