Sure, if you smoke something like that.  Inhaling any smoke can kill you.

I haven't heard about smoking banana peels since the 1960s.

I did go to a Hare Krishna wedding once where they burned whole bananas on a fire. It was indoors. The burning bananas gave off a noxious black smoke and almost all of the guests left in a hurry.

I don't know if it would kill you or not, but that smoke was pretty horrible and it wouldn't surprise me if it could. Of course, anything that deprives you of oxygen would probably have the same effect.

I've heard of "Waste not, want not" ... but smoking banana peels to keep from paying the price of cigarettes is going a little far!

It may or may not but the psychosis that compels you to smoke banana peels may also compel you to stand in front of a speeding bus and that IS definitely fatal.
