  1. Absolutely, if we keep patroling the seas of the world as if we own them. You'll be safer when we stop being the world's policeman, That said, part of being in the milltary is that you could wind up in a war anytime the politicians want one and war is no picnic.

  2. You have a bigger chance of dying in your kitchen or bathroom. But yes you could die if you were extremely careless or you just have really crappy luck or WW3 starts when you join..

  3. you could, things could go wrong, we never know when or where we are going to die!

  4. As long as you take your job seriously, do things safely, then no. But there is always a risk no matter what industrial type job you do. BTW what kind of mechanic do you want to be? There are many different types.

  5. you can die as a marine on an aircraft carrier so i'm sure you could also die in the navy...what kind of question is this.  accidents happen all the time, training or otherwise.

  6. I would be mroe worried about being hit by a car honestly.

  7. Any mishaps can happen while on the job...or even terrorist can sabotage the vessel.  No where is safe!  But have no worry, Marines are always attached with the Navy since Marines are in the Dept. of the Navy, so if you are worried about getting killed, they'll ensure your safety!

  8. Yes you can. Being on a carrier during flight ops is just as dangerous as being in combat. Having said that before they put you there they make sure you are a highly trained skilled professional. Navy life has a lot going for it. I did my time in the Coast Guard on a high endurance cutter about like a Destroyer Escort. I loved every minute of a 9 year career.

Good luck and keep the faith.

  9. you can die no matter where you are or what you're doing - its part of life.

  10. Yes, it's everybody's target in a war. Have fun!

  11. You can die walking into your bank.

You can die driving home from School or work.

You can die eating a hot dog.

You (women) can die in childbirth.

You can die mowing the front yard or walking the darn Dog!

YES, you can die doing anything including being on an Aircraft carrier, as an aircraft mechanic or BOTH. The military and naval services are inherently a dangerous business BUT I would rather be on a Carrier at sea than driving down the I-17 into Phoenix

Just so you know, the US NAVY has spent BILLIONS of dollars to make sure that every vessel is as safe as possible.  The ships, aircraft and equipment are designed to facilitate the safest use possible.

We have come a long way in ship design since the Liberty Ships of WW2. (I can't believe I wrote something charitable about the Navy!!)

  12. In every workplace, you have to remember it's "safety first".

I know you will be working there on a non-combat position. However, in doing your job you're not just gonna be working with machines and tools and whatnot. You will be dealing with lots of different people with individual personalities. Those are the things that you be more or equally beware of as well. Treat everyboby with utmost respect and obedience to superiors. Because US military people are one of the most intelligent people who can intelligently stage your tragic death and make it look like an accident... that happened many times and don't be a statistic.

    Good Luck!

  13. Yes, you could go "man overboard", you could have a heart attack, etc. The risks for death are very low on a ship if you do your job right. A carrier is where the surgeons for the strike group are located anyways. You get the best medical care while on a carrier than any other ship (other than the Mercy or Comfort).

  14. Definately.

Aircraft Carriers are the number one target in war.

And on deck, the arrestor wires the jets use to grab onto with their tail hooks to bring them to a halt so they don't fall right over the edge on landing? If one of those snaps, which they can as they are put through tremendous stress and strain, well, a wire spinning through the air at something like 1000km will cause serious injury to anyone that gets in its way.

On the other hand, Aircraft Carriers are EXTREMELY well protected, around them they have their own little fleet-a battleship, a submarine etc, plus aircraft and missiles have been designed to protect them (e.g Phoenix missile, f14 Tomcat), so the chances of anyone being able to actually destroy one are probably pretty slim.

And the arrestor wires are constantly checked, tested, serviced and replaced. They are EXTRA careful with them, coz would you like to be the person who said the wire would last another month or whatever and it snapped, killing people and possibly destroying aircraft? No.

If its something you want to do badly enough, it won't matter. You could die getting out of the bathtub.

  15. Mishaps happen all the time, the USS George Washington had a fire onboard (MAY 22nd), USS Cole terror attack OCT 12, 2000.  I was deployed when a chief walked into a helicopters rotor arc and was decapitated.  Ive had friends on SAR missions off the coast of San Diego searching for downed sailors and marines that crashed while landing on their ship. I was a Helicopter Mechanic AM2 for 8 years.  Mishaps happen anywhere at anytime, all you can do is your job and do it the best you can everytime.  Now the likely hood of something happening is rare especially as long as everyone is doing their job properly.

  16. don't walk in front of any jet engines and you should be alright.

  17. Yes..

Navy carriers are some of the most dangerous ships.   Below is a list of some of the biggest accidents since WW II.   Not included on this list are the smaller accidents where only 1-2 people were killed or simply blown over the side of the ship.  Also not included are ships lost due to enemy action.

I can not find an internet reference but scuttlebutt is that on each Navy carrier deployment,  at least one sailor dies per deployment.

You are looking at a dangerous career field.  My hat is off to you for your desire to serve.  Keep your head and you should be fine.

  18. You can die from crossing the road...

    why worry about it?

  19. u could. if yall were attacked is d most likely cause of (your) death

  20. You saw the one epoisode of Shockwave where this one mechanic crew guy got suck into a A-6 Intruder jet turbine engine and almost die?

  21. You can die anytime, anywhere, and of any reason.

  22. The deck of an Air Craft Carrier is rated the most dangerous work site on the planet.
