Until this May, I used to be a graduate student. At that time I used to know a lecturer (for those not in academia...a lecturer is a full time university teacher WITHOUT a PhD and as such, occasionally subject to condescension from "real" academics with PhDs) with whom I had a love hate relationship. This May, when I finished my PhD, I went to see her. At one point I remarked:

Me: Finally, no longer a worthless grad student.

She: Yes...right.

Me:(with a smile) But why do you think PhD students are worthless?

She: Well, I never said so... you said that... I just said yes.

Me: Thats strange. Because, a few months ago, when I had told you how it was wrong that PhD students who had given up so much opportunity cost to be in grad school were denied even living wages, you didn't agree with me. In fact, you said "you are PRIVILEGED to be even making 15K" at that time. You could have just agreed with me then, like now.

She: Yes and what I said was right.

Me: So you do mean that PhD students are worthless? Because someone who is too low to deserve even 15K properly must be quite worthless.

She: What big deal is the PhD worth either?

Me: Well, its abt four years beyond masters. That means it is at least as much better than a Masters as a college degree is better than a high school diploma.

  1. and the question IS ????????????????

and i disagree with your last statement. after the first 4 yrs. it is a case of diminishing returns.

  2. I think anyone with a PhD would have better things to worry about.

    Sheeze....

  3. I think

    (1) you set yourself up for the conversation to happen like this

    (2) she was letting you dig your own hole

I would not read too much else.

  4. How it reads w/o further context?  You went to the meeting to pick a fight and would have attacked ANY reply she made to your statement.

  5. Sounds like you were trying to pick up an earlier argument and she was trying to mind her own business, but you were so determined to argue that she barely even had to contribute.

  6. Unfortunately I see poor grammar and poor spelling in your sentence structure...

So you were trying to show off at how smart you were (are)?

    Too bad...

I do know jobs all pay different, so I have no idea what would pay you 15 thousand to start...

That's dang good if you ask me, considering your age...

    Try living like I do...

I am disabled making 12 thousand per year on disability alone...

I am making half of what I did when I was working before I had my surgery that didn't cure my pain...

Consider yourself lucky and get on with your life...

  7. I think it's pretty great to be paid to be a student.  I'm a graduate student who's on a stipend and it absolutely amazes me that just a year ago I was paying $10,000 a year to go to school, and now my tuition is provided for me and they're actually paying me to study.  How crazy is that?  I would never complain about being paid and being given an education at the same time.
