Question:

Can you do TEFL/CELTA via distance learning?

I am interested in gaining a TEFL qualification so that, at some point, I can teach English abroad. I know there are various different ones - TEFL, CELTA, TESOL and I'm a bit confused as to which one I really need but what I'm also really wondering about is whether you can do these courses distance learning or part time. Can anyone give me a light on this matter?

Thank you and God bless.

P.S. I'll give ten points for the best answer.

  1. Depends on where you want to teach.

TEFL is normally very acceptable by employers in Thailand. CELTA is a bit more advanced and more suitable for those looking into a long-term career. It is more master's level - less for those teaching and traveling or abroad for a year or two.

You can do distance, but you are learning to teach, so you need some time in front of real students. Theory is nice, but actually working with humans is the best way to learn.

You want to gain confidence, employers look for it and it helps you be successful.

  2. I would get a CELTA.  I hired teachers an international school and we put people with a CELTA above the many people who had a TEFL.  A lot of nuts get the TEFL, but not as many get the CELTA.

  3. Yes, you can in Sheffield Hallam - this site also explains the different certificates:
