Some friends of mine want a fuel efficient 7 seat SUV. I recommended the Diesel BMW X5, but they had already researched that and it isn't sold in the US. Would it be possible for them to get a ferry or some similar-like deal?

Thanks

  1. all of the people below me are wrong.

yes you can do this. its called EUROPEAN DELIVERY.

and you can actually save some money on the price of your car. yes it can be cheaper. because when you do bring it to the u.s., you have already driven it around so its now a used car. and used cars are taxed less upon import.

and the people below me are stupid to think it wont pass emissions because when you order the car, they will build it to north american standards.

but just so you're aware, the X5 only has 5 seats.

and they make a 3.0 liter, 6 cyl. model of the X5 and it is quite fuel efficient compared to the V8 model.

  2. Just some thoughts:

--if it is not sold in the US, it may not be allowed to be driven in the states due to emissions or other regulations that don't meet US standards.

--I've read all the high-end German makes have a program where you go to get *your* car from the factory.  It had a different vibe than what you are looking for I think:   you'd go and make a bit of a vacation out of it and tour around, also tour the factory/plant then pay the exorbitant fees to get it taxed / shipped into America.  Kinda the jet-set type of person who treats their Porsche as a member of the family.

--Many 7 seat American SUV in the last few months have come out with a hybrid option.  Diesel is great, but I spotted $5.20/gal. in Maryland today, so there's another variable.   And I was in an X5 and 7 people would be tight.

    --Hope this works out.

  3. Probibly not legal in the U.S. due to our ultra liberal vehicle laws.  I would look at the GMC Acadia, around $30k, seats 7 better than most others, 26 mpg, Highest inclass of all 7 pass suvs that are not hybrid

  4. No. To bring the car into the US it must meet all standards and that car does not meet emission yet. Tell him to wait or buy a Chevy with the new Hybrid system.
