Can you donate blood if you sometimes smoke marijuana? (USA)?

  1. I used to all the time.  And since I have good plasma, they used to borderline harass me to do pheresis every week.


  2. I've looked it up and nothing I have found says that you can't if you smoke marijuana.  You CANNOT donate blood if you have injected yourself with drugs not prescribed by a physician. As long as you are healthy, and you meet the requirements, please donate so you can save someone's life.

  3. According to some of the Red Cross chapters, yes, you can - as long as you are not under the influence at the time of the donation (see links below).

    That surprised me.  I guess it clears the body quickly enough that unless you are high at the time, there is no real danger.

  4. Yes you can.  Blood banks don't even test for THC.  But don't donate while you're high.  A person sick enough to need a transfusion doesn't need the THC.
