Can you download video files to your iPhone and watch them without going through iTunes?

Specifically, if someone has posted a Windows-formatted video file (such as .mpg, etc.) can I download them from my iPhone Safari internet browser and watch them on my iPhone?

yes you can but most formats are not supported by the iphone, so the answer is yes but not all of them. Only some. please vote as best asnwer.

Yes, you just need to convert your video to mp4 video, then you can add it to iTunes and sync it to your iPhone. iTunes is just a manager to help you upload video to iPhone.

You should make sure the video is MP4 or H2.64 video for iPhone. You can try DVD to iPhone Converter Suite to rip DVD movie and convert videos in any format to iPhone. It is the fastest converter I have used. Also, the output quality is great.

If you can embed the file in a browser as a mpeg, qt it is going to work without a problem.

If it is FLV, or WMV it will give you a blank.

mpeg or mp4 is very widely available format, so you should be fine.  Other option is to upload to Youtube, if you are having issues with different formats, and you can take it anywhere you go and play them.
