no cars in venice. at least in the city. but in the mainland there is an area called mestre, its in the county of venice and of course there you can drive, cause its in the mainland!

You can only drive to the edge of Venice and have to park your car there and enter the city by walking or boat (taxi or bus boat/ferry).

People walk around dragging lugguage with wheels all the time.

Or you can also take a ferry with your car to Lido which is a part of Venice and leave your car there.  At Lido, you can stay in a hotel.  Lido also has casino, beach and shops.

Lido is also connected to the rest of Venice by boat.

Gondola is more for tourists or leisurely ride.

That is the reason that Venice is unique and fun.

I dont remember seeing any cars around. Maybe for cargo?

Roads are meant for pedestrians. The other transportation is by boat, or gondola.

the best way around venice is to walk, there are bus,taxi boats which are good to move to different neibourghhoods.

The only place you can drive to in Venice is the Piazzale Roma which is at one end of the Grand Canal. From there on you have to take a water bus (vaporetto) or a water taxi. Gondolas are available all around Venice but they are very expensive and are mainly used by tourists or Venetians when the marry. Even the ambulances are boats and instead of having boy racers in cars you get them in motor boats. (We encountered a couple on one of the small canals a few weeks ago.) There are loads of places to walk around in Venice also and plenty of bridges.

you cant have a car, from the airport you take a boat, you usually must walk since a taxi boat or a gondola costs money
