  1. Good information in the question above...but I'd like to change one thing, the part about Mexico. Mexico has changed a lot recently and the cops are a lot less corrupt.  There are also a lot of new toll roads in Mexico, and for a little money, it's basically the same as the interstates in the U.S.

  2. well, it depends. where are you located? in central america, it is possible, and even in north america, it is possible, but a real hassle. i am in north america, i COULD drive there...but it would be one heck of a long drive. it would be a hassle, and just faster to fly. good luck.

  3. No.  I'm in Japan....

  4. Yes you can. I drove the Pann Am highway three times Phoenix Arizona to Santiago Chile and back. You do have to take a ferry from the  north of Panama Casnal to Venzuela though Overland it is nearly impassable though Land Rover 4 wheel drives make the trip. But now days you will need a bio fuel vehicle as well. Most of South America is now  using alcohol. Driving through Mexico is bad. When I last did it in 1980, you want to hand the cop at check points a $5 bill. Failure to do that will have him pull your car apart and take your camera, wrist watch or other valubles. Once you clear Mexico not so bad, but there are some local bandits in Gutamala and Venzuela. Same thing, pay them off up front and they leave you alone.  I highly suggest against a new vehicle. 4 wheel drive recommended. Land Rovers are the best. In South America, most of your roads will be gravel. At high altitudes you may have to hire a teem of horses to pull you to the top. A turbo charger would make that unnecessary.
