My U.S. passport expired a month ago. I'm planning to drive to Ensenada, Mexico from San Diego. Will I experience any difficulty coming back to the U.S.? It now takes 6 -8 weeks to receive a new passport.

Thanks!

  1. i thought all you needed was an identification card....valid.

  2. Just need  a driver's license til next year. Passport office backed up, taking months to get one right now.

  3. Socceref is correct.  Currently, to DRIVE to Mexico , you do not need a passport.  you do need one to FLY.  As early as Jan. 2008, you will need a passport for land travel to and from Mexico.  See first website below to read the passport law, and 2nd website for onfo on applying for passports.  It is currently taking at least 4 and one half months to get a passport.  hve a great trip!

  4. My suggestion is take an hour off of your drive and go to Rosarito:

Anyhow, no, if you are driving you will not have a problem.  Bring your drivers license and your birth certificate.

  5. if the vehicle you intend to drive is registered to you in the U.S. have papers at the ready to show proof and make sure you have a valid drivers licence from the state you live in, and also try to obtain "mexican insurance". which you might be able to get before you go across the border, or within a few miles after crossing. and DO NOT mention that your passport has expired. let them tell you if you have to present it.

  6. no you can't leave the country without the proper documents they will also check at their country also it will cause more problem because they will put you in jail instead and they will fine you some money also.

  7. i thought the passport situation was not in effect until july of 2008,as long as u have proof of who you are should suffice

  8. OMG!! i live in Ensenada, isnt it great here?? anyways, you should bring an id from work or something, a license.. i dont think you'll have any trouble.. i go to san diego all the time.. i use my american passport but before i just used my california id. i never had a problem..

  9. You should be fine if you're driving.  I would take along your picture ID and birth certificate as your ID instead of your expired passport.  Your expired passport is like having no ID at all and that's bad!

    Happy travels!

    P.S. Ensenada is fun!

  10. you might. never hurts to have on hand at least two forms of current valid ID.  good luck and don't lose your temper over anything.   ;)

  11. I WOULDN'T
