  1. It's illegal and dangerous to drive with tire chains on dry pavement..the chains damage the road, (and your tires)and can cause you to skid....

  2. They'll wear out your tyres and make your mpg plummet if you use them all winter.

  3. you can only use them in snow.

  4. No, you should only have them on when in snow/ice or you reasonably expect to encounter those conditions.  1/4" of snow does not usually warrant chains, but ice could.  Driving on bare roads with chains tears them all to heck and most cities don't permit it.

  5. Most states will only allow you to use them when it is snowing plus as mentioned above they will wear out your tires plus they can do a lot of damage to your car if they should break.

  6. If you drove all winter with chains on, you would not have much left of the rear of your car.

  7. Only in snow or they will wear out really fast on pavement. Also, some places do not allow them at all. Too much damage to the roads.

  8. Don't be so lazy.

  9. You're basically only supposed to use chains in areas that will ALWAYS have snow down. Otherwise it's probably illegal because if there isn't snow down it causes excess wear/tear on the roads.

Your best bet would be studded tires if you want some extra traction in the winter.

  10. Chains on your tires really give a lot of wear on your tires.  Only use them when you have to.

  11. I noticed that no one mentioned that, on dry roads, chains don't provide safe traction for controling and braking the car at most, normal driving speeds.

That's why, in most states cars with chains have set speed limits at a maximum of thirty-five mph, or so.  Any faster, and the metal parts of the chains slide right over the hard pavement without providing any grip.
