Or drop the course you're doing?

At school, you cannot drop out because you choose to, unless you are inquired to be expelled and you have your papers to fill in before leaving your last year and if you want to apply for a job, whether it's just temporary vaccancies or permanent. You have a lot of skills to learn at school.

At college, you take a course which you choose and think would help you further in your career. But if you decide you don't like that course or want to set up a daily job instead, do you have the permission to drop out?

  1. Speak with your professors to drop the classes.

I.E. if you're having trouble with the class or it's not for you, your teacher might suggest if you fail the upcoming exam you drop the class, or simply by choice.

  2. Universities and colleges are much different than high school, mainly because you don't have to be there. High school is mandatory in the United States and drop out rates look poorly for each high school so many schools try to keep those rates at minimum.

Professors in college will recognize that you have different interests and priorities. Basically you pay for the classes and you can decide whether or not to attend, or even to continue. Many colleges have add drop periods where you can go to any class you want to see if you'd like the course, without penalty on your report.

You don't need permission, you can just do it -- but consider your long term goals and whether it'd be beneficial for you to drop out. For some people college is not always answer; others take many years off between high school and college to really figure out what they want. Don't be afraid to explore your options.

  3. Yes you can just talk with your Teacher, but I would not recommend it!

  4. Simple answer... No they don't really care. The only problems is that you have to drop/withdraw from the class by a certain deadline usually a couple weeks into the class. If you want to drop the class after that you still can but you will receive a final grade which will likely be an F. You can retake classes and the new grade can be used (each school has different rules on this).
