Can you dye a polyester cotton shirt? Will it come out alright? Doesn't matter what colour. Best Method?

Want to dye a few shirts in different colours. Please don't ask me to use the washing machine. I won't be confident with that.

  1. I would buy a new shirt in the colour that you want it, that way nothing gets ruined and you now have 2.

  2. Hi, believe me I have tried to dye so many clothes and I have never succeeded. It always comes out of the wash and it comes out on your skin.  I would just buy new shirts or keep them that colour.  Plus, dying is a very very messy job.

  3. I wouldn't recommend doing that - I tried it with a lovely white satin shirt, trying to make it black, resulting in a shirt that was unevenly not-really-coloured, dirty,not-quite-grey. Being satin, though, it was 100% polyester, and as the percentage of cotton increases, your results may be correspondingly better. I would expect that if it was COTTON/polyester instead (and therefore had a greater than 50% cotton content) you might get a reasonable result, but I haven't tried this type of fabric myself. I would suggest getting a piece of fabric with a similar composition and using it as a sample to "trial-dye", in the same way that a strand test is done before dyeing ALL your hair.

  5. Depends on the ratio of cotton the higher the better results.  Polyester doesn't dye easily and the darker the colour of the dye the better.  Best method is to follow the instructions carefully and wear protective gloves.  You may be able to find a natural solution on the web.
